MDF Weight Per Square Foot by Thickness

If you need to estimate MDF weight for anything other than a standard 4x8 sheet — custom cuts, odd panel sizes, a stack of shelves at 30 inches — weight per square foot is the number you actually want. Multiply it by your total square footage and you have the weight.

Here are the per-square-foot values for standard-grade MDF (density around 700-750 kg/m³):

• 1/8 inch: 0.53 lbs/sq ft
• 1/4 inch: 1.06 lbs/sq ft
• 3/8 inch: 1.59 lbs/sq ft
• 1/2 inch: 2.13 lbs/sq ft
• 5/8 inch: 2.66 lbs/sq ft
• 3/4 inch: 3.00 to 3.19 lbs/sq ft
• 1 inch: 4.00 to 4.25 lbs/sq ft
• 1-1/4 inch: 5.31 lbs/sq ft

At 3/4-inch, you are looking at roughly 3 pounds per square foot. That single number is the one most woodworkers and cabinet shops have memorized, and it gets you close enough for planning purposes.

How Different Grades Shift the Numbers

Not all MDF is the same density. The chart above covers standard grade, which accounts for about 80 percent of what gets sold at retail. But three other grades show up regularly, and each one lands at a different weight.

Ultralight MDF (density around 550-600 kg/m³) weighs 25 to 30 percent less than standard. So a 3/4-inch sheet drops from about 3.0 lbs/sq ft down to 2.1 to 2.3 lbs/sq ft. Cabinet shops have been switching to ultralight in droves over the past few years because the handling is so much easier and the finished product works fine for most interior applications. The surface is a little softer and does not hold screws quite as well near the edges, but for paint-grade cabinet boxes and shelf panels it gets the job done.

Moisture-resistant (MR) MDF uses melamine-urea-formaldehyde resin instead of standard UF resin. The extra resin content bumps density up 5 to 10 percent above standard, so a 3/4-inch MR board runs about 3.15 to 3.30 lbs/sq ft. You will see this spec’d for bathroom vanities, laundry room cabinets, and any interior millwork in high-humidity spaces. It is not waterproof — nothing about MDF is waterproof — but it handles occasional moisture exposure without swelling as fast as standard board.

Fire-rated (FR) MDF incorporates mineral or chemical retardants during manufacturing. These additives are heavy. FR boards can weigh 10 to 15 percent more than standard, putting 3/4-inch panels at 3.30 to 3.45 lbs/sq ft. Commercial construction projects spec FR-rated panels for wall cladding, wainscoting, and trim in buildings that need to meet specific fire code ratings.

Why Per-Square-Foot Weight Matters

Three practical scenarios where this number saves you time:

Shipping and freight. Ordering MDF panels online or from a distributor means paying by weight. If you are buying 20 sheets of 3/4-inch cut to 30x60 inches, you need the total weight for the freight quote. Per-square-foot math: 30 × 60 = 1,800 sq inches = 12.5 sq ft per sheet. At 3.0 lbs/sq ft, each sheet runs 37.5 lbs. Twenty sheets: 750 lbs. Now you know whether it fits in your truck or whether you need delivery.

Shelf and cabinet loading. Building a bookcase with six shelves at 36 × 12 inches each in 3/4-inch MDF? Each empty shelf weighs about 9 lbs. Load them with books (roughly 25 lbs per linear foot of shelf) and the shelf plus contents hit 84 lbs per shelf. That changes your bracket spacing and hardware selection entirely.

Floor load on big installations. A full wall of built-in cabinetry using 3/4-inch MDF can put 500+ lbs of panel weight onto a 10-foot run of floor, before you add the contents. Second-story or older construction? Check the floor joists before you start building.
